Daniel Birnbaum, Artistic Director von Acute Art: „Unreal City is an entirely new form of exhibition. The arrival of augmented reality has given rise to a new immaterial art form and nothing could be more exciting for me as a curator than the opportunity to explore these possibilities with some of today’s key artists. The emergence of a new medium always presents new possibilities for art and for the ways art can reach broader audiences. Join us in this voyage into uncharted terrain!

Jacob De Geer, CEO von Acute Art: „At a moment when all cultural institutions in Europe are closed, Acute Art joins forces with Dazed to offer audiences in London an extraordinary exhibition for free. It takes place outside: you can see it alone or with a friend whilst talking a walk along the river. Acute Art was founded on the vision of democratising art and bringing it to places where it could not be before. In these complicated times our aspiration has gained new relevance and urgency. We are happy that all the artists are joining us in the project. Institutions are closed but art should not be cancelled!

Künstler Ólafur Elíasson: „The current pandemic has caused immeasurable suffering and disrupted so much of our everyday existence together. This is especially true for those of us who value and take part in cultural life. Because many of the important cultural sites that we take for granted are all closed – cinemas, theatres, concert houses, clubs, museums and stadiums – the only public spaces where we can move about safely together is outdoors, in the shared space of the city. It’s important to celebrate – even now – that public space belongs to all of us and that it is, in fact, very valuable. The artwork I’ve created, Wunderkammer, is about looking at your surroundings anew. Use it to explore our shared public spaces and add to them an element of the unexpected.

Künstlerin Alicja Kwad: „Is the information of something as much as the something itself? The world is moving towards a situation where information can virtually replace materiality. Art is just beginning to develop in this direction and I’m glad to take part in this journey.

Künstler KAWS: „I hope people see this show as a turning point of how exhibitions can be experienced. You witness it, you walk around it, interacting with the works in a way that gets into your mind and becomes part of your memory. It’s much more than looking at a picture. I’m comfortable with ephemeral works just from doing graffiti which would sometimes last for a few hours or a few months and then you’re left with the photographs so this seems full circle for me.

Künstler Marco Brambilla: „AR has the potential for people to engage with art in an often more personal and intimate way. The pandemic definitely made the concept of the artwork reaching beyond the gallery walls more compelling. This is art through the window of a device that virtually everyone has – a device used by so many to interact with the world around them.

Ahmad Swaid, Head of Content von Dazed Media: „Art has always been about the shared experience, whether it’s in a gallery, or at a cinema or even on social media, and in these challenging times, by launching the world’s biggest group AR exhibition with Acute Art we hope to unite, inspire and continue pushing Dazed’s mission of participating with our audiences and the general public. We’ve all had to adapt our relationship with technology this year and through this exhibition we hope to look towards the future of what’s possible between the collaboration of both culture and tech.
